If you're interested in birds or even think you might be, then a
trip to Long Point Bird Observatory is in order. For nearly 40 years, biologists and
visitors at LPBO have studied the birds of the Long Point area. Nearly 370 species of
birds have been found at Long Point. When you think of the 600 species that are found
throughout North America, Long Point looms large as one of the most exciting places on the
continent to observe our rich birdlife.
LPBO staff and volunteers have focused their attention on the spectacular spring and
fall migrations of Long Point, which reach their peaks during May and September,
respectively. During summer, the folks at LPBO monitor the local breeding birds whose
songs fill the marshes and woodlands of Long Point from June through August. We also study
local populations of reptiles and amphibians, and the annual migration of Monarch
Butterflies.
LPBO relies heavily on the support of skilled volunteers from around the globe who help
us in our research at Long Point.
LPBO invites you to visit its field station and visitor centre located on Old Cut Blvd.
You don't need binoculars or fancy equipment to enjoy birds at LPBO. During migration,
banding demonstrations (from 9:00 a.m. until noon daily, weather permitting) make it
possible for you to see the birds up close. And LPBO staff will be happy to answer your
questions, whether they have to do with the science of bird study or just helping you
figure out what kinds of birds you've got in your backyard. You can also drop into the
Visitor Centre to learn more about the Long Point area and our programs. Novice and
serious bird watchers alike are urged to check with us for information on rarities and
local hot spots. A checklist of the birds of Long Point and a bird-finding guide to the
region plus other LPBO items are available for purchase. Check out the LPBO Merchandise For Sale Page.
Group Tours & Education Program
We also take group bookings for schools, universities, naturalist
clubs and birding groups. For a small donation (currently $2/person), groups are
provided with a morning guided tour of our on-site migration monitoring program, lasting
about one hour. Anyone planning on arriving with a group larger than 6 persons is
strongly advised to book well in advance, especially in spring. Please note that we
normally cannot accommodate groups larger than 30 people. Illustrated on-site
evening lectures are also available on request.
To get to LPBO: LPBO is situated on
the north shore of lake Erie, in Canada. From Highway 401 or Highway 3, come south
on Highway 59 to the north shore of Lake Erie. We're on Old Cut Blvd. on Long Point, just
two streets before Highway 59 ends at Long Point Provincial Park. We are the 6th building
on the right as you head north on Old Cut Blvd. from Highway 59. There is a small sign on
the front lawn. You can park across the road in the Ministry of Natural Resources boat
launch parking lot. We're open to the public during spring and fall migration (from April
to mid June and early August to mid November, respectively). The best time to come for a
visit is in the morning, since the bird banding program winds up around noon. It's a good
idea to call in advance (519-586-2885).
We'll see you there!
