1959
  • Several members of the Ontario Bird Banding Association (OBBA) make first trips to Breakwater (by foot) and Tip stations (by newly acquired 1947 Jeep), thus establishing two stations on Long Point.

  • 10' X 12' cabin erected at Tip station.
  • Sampling methods for banding migrants instituted.
  • First Heligoland trap built at Tip station.
  • LPBO established as a committee of OBBA.

  • Donated cabin erected at Breakwater.
  • Daily census instituted at each station.

  • Additional 32' X 20' cabin erected at Tip station.
  • First annual report published.
  • First Land Rover acquired for beach   transportation.
  • Duck banding initiated at base of Long Point.

  • Tree Swallow research begins at Tip station.
  • First breeding bird census plot established.

1965

  • First seasonal employee hired (Warden for Tip station).
  • 50,000th bird banded.
  • First year of continuous coverage of the Tip station (April to October).

1967

  • LPBO incorporated.
  • Workshop built at Tip station.
  • Erosion destroys first Heligoland trap at Tip.
  • First use of LPBO facilities for graduate student research.

  • LPBO becomes an independent organisation from OBBA.
  • Associate membership, with no legal rights, established to develop financial and volunteer support.
