Adopt-a-bird?
It sounds a little crazy, but that's exactly the opportunity
offered by the Long Point Bird Observatory. Many of the birds banded by LPBO are available
for "adoption" for a modest fee from $30 for a Red-breasted Nuthatch to
$100 for a Sharp-shinned Hawk. This doesn't mean you can take the birds home with you!
After all, they are wild animals! However, sponsoring a banded bird supports a worthy
cause and it's fun. We call the program "Project Recovery."
Long Point Bird Observatory uses bird banding as a
tool to study the migration pathways of birds, their longevity and fluctuations in their
populations. For example: a Gray Catbird banded by LPBO was recently recovered in
Guatemala, and a Slate-colored Junco banded at Long Point and recovered in Pennsylvania
was nearly 10 years old.
Your sponsorship of a banded bird will help fund
important research. You'll receive a certificate which acknowledges you as the sponsor and
provides details of the banded bird as well as a photograph of the bird, both mounted
together, suitable for framing. An adopted bird makes a great gift! Naturally, your
adoption is a tax-creditable donation. So . . . Adopt-a-bird, support an
important scientific and conservation effort, and receive a unique reminder of the
research here at Long Point. Adopting-a-bird is as simple as giving us
a call on our toll-free number: 1-888-448-BIRD. As soon as we receive your request and payment, we'll create your certificate and
immediately send it to you.
Project Recovery makes a wondefully unique gift
for a special friend or
loved one.
