Who We Are
L ong Point Bird Observatory was the first organization of its
type in North America. As a non-profit, research and montoring station, LPBO is
committed to involving Canadians in research directed at the conservation of wild birds
and their habitats. Our programs at Long Point are focused on local breeding and migratory
birds. We have a special interest in promoting the participation of amateurs and
volunteers in our research. We believe that many people working together can accomplish
a great deal more than could a few professionals working alone.
Our Mission
From its inception, LPBO has recognized that amateur naturalists working together can
contribute meaningful scientific data to biological research. LPBO has been at the
forefront of developing, coordinating and sponsoring a variety of volunteer based
projects.
LPBO:
- Undertakes and promotes bird monitoring programs at Long Point, using volunteers to the
maximum practical extent
- Undertakes and publishes the results of studies of wild birds and their habitats
- Maintains high scientific and professional standards in all its activities
- Works constructively with those whose activities impinge upon the conservation of wild
birds and their habitats
- Co-operates with others engaged in relevant research
- Engages in educational activities related to the work of the Observatory
- Makes the facilities of the Observatory available to those engaged in appropriate
natural history activities at Long Point
