A daily estimated total estimates
the numbers of birds of each species that were present in or passing
through a specified area and were detected by observers on a given day.
There are several components of a daily estimated total, and this varies
among CMMN stations. At most stations, the DET is derived from a
combination of (1) census (a standardized route in which all birds seen or
heard along the route are counted), (2) total number of birds banded, (3)
incidental observations recorded by observers throughout the day. Some
CMMN stations also perform a visible migration count of birds flying over
the station. DETs are used to analyze trends of migratory landbirds across
Canada.
