Fundy Bird Observatory
(formerly called Grand Manan Bird Observatory) is located on Grand Manan
Island in the Bay of Fundy. Grand Manan is a
very popular birding hot
spot, and has been ever since John James Audubon visited in 1833. More
than 360 species of birds have been recorded to date from the
archipelago, of which approximately 250 are noted annually.
Recent pilot migration
monitoring projects have identified several suitable sites in the
archipelago, but obtaining guaranteed long-term access to any of these
has so far proven elusive. Therefore, migration monitoring is currently
on hold while the Observatory attempts to raise funds sufficient to
purchase a permanent headquarters and monitoring facility.
More than 10,000 songbirds have
been banded since 1995, mostly during the fall. The Fundy Bird
Observatory is a project of, and sponsored by, the Grand Manan Whale
& Seabird Research Station, a registered, not-for-profit research
and education facility since 1981; located at 24 Route 776, North Head,
NB, E5G 1A1.
