Established in 1996, Haldimand
Bird Observatory operates three stations: Selkirk Provincial Park, Rock
Point Banding Station (both on the north shore of Lake Erie) and Ruthven
Park near Cayuga, Ontario. All are readily accessible by road.
The woods in Selkirk Provincial
Park are dominated by red and white oaks, with maple, cherry, ash,
beech, and shagbark hickory mixed in. The migration monitoring site is
located in a 25-yr old white pine plantation surrounded by hawthorn,
hickory/oak forest and field. The park is noted for some of its rare
prairie plants.
Rock Point Banding Station is
located in Rock Point Provincial Park near Dunnville. The site is
dominated by dogwood, cranberry and small stands of spruce. The 10 mist
nets are located off a no-access road in the southwest side of the park.
Birds take advantage of the habitat as they migrate along the north
shore of Lake Erie.
Ruthven Banding Station is
within the grounds of an historic mansion. This site has nets located
around the edge of a meadow. The site takes advantage of birds migrating
along the Grand River and the 1000 acres of protected forest adjacent to
the site.
In spring, banding and a daily
census are done from approximately the third weekend in March to the
first weekend in June and, in fall, from the third weekend in July to
the first weekend in November. Volunteers are welcome in spring and fall
at all three sites, and room and board can be provided for volunteers
interested in Selkirk or Rock Point, and who can come for at least a
month
