11   Thunder Cape Bird Observatory (ON):  Dates: 1 May - 31 Oct.  Special Projects: raptor counts, owl banding, breeding bird studies.  Description: Located on Lake Superior, east of Thunder Bay; excellent spot for songbirds, waterbirds and raptors; cosy cabin (and sauna!).  The most commonly banded species include Black-capped Chickadee, Dark-eyed Junco, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Swainson's Thrush and Palm Warbler.  Good numbers of Sharp-shinned Hawks and Northern Saw-whet Owls are also banded.  Thunder Cape Bird Observatory is a joint project of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR), the Thunder Bay Field Naturalists, and Long Point Bird Observatory. 12   Whitefish Point Bird Observatory (MI).  Dates: 15 Mar - 15 Nov.  Special Projects: raptor counts, owl banding, waterbird counts, Piping Plover monitoring.  Description: 2 field stations in beautiful locations on the south shore of Lake Superior about 50 km NW of Sault Ste. Marie in Michigan; spectacular area for boreal species; phenomenal spring and fall migration of songbirds, raptors and waterbirds; stations are fully equipped.  Species commonly sampled include Black-capped Chickadee, Swainson's Thrush, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-rumped Warbler,  Nashville Warbler, and Tennessee Warbler as well as large numbers of hawks and owls.  Contact: Jeannette Morss, WPBO, 16914 N. 13   Long Point Bird Observatory (ON).  Dates: 15 Mar - 15 Nov.  Special Projects: owl banding, breeding bird census plots, breeding studies of Tree Swallows and Hooded Warblers, monarch butterfly counts, turtle marking.  Description: Oldest bird observatory in North America; 3 field stations located on north shore of Lake Erie within the Long Point World Biosphere Reserve; internationally acclaimed migration corridor and vagrant trap; facilities range from very rustic to modern.  On average about 20,000 birds of over 140 species are banded each year; since 1960 over 550,000 birds have been banded by the observatory.  Contact: Jul Wojnowski, LPBO, PO Box 160, Port Rowan, ON  N0E 1M0; tel: 519-586-3531 (W); fax: 519-586-3532. 14   Innis Point Bird Observatory (ON).  Dates: Daily spring coverage (late April-June 7) includes standardized banding, census and Estimated Daily Totals (starting 1997); reduced but regular coverage throughout the year. On average 4,000-5,000 birds of 100 species banded per year.  Description: Operating since 1982.  Located on Department of Defence lands adjacent to Ottawa River and Shirley's Bay, near Kanata.  Access must be pre-arranged (see Contact below)  Special Projects:  Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS), Breeding Bird Census, Tree Swallow and Eastern Bluebird plot, Purple Martin colony.  Snow Bunting banding in winter. 15   Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory (ON).  Dates: spring only.  Description:  This site is in the Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area located near the eastern end of Lake Ontario; onsite facilities.  Well known area to birders; good numbers of Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-rumped Warbler, American Goldfinch, and White-throated Sparrow.  Contact: Eric Machell, P.O. 17   Haldimand Bird Observatory (ON). Dates: spring & fall. Description: Two locations, 1) Selkirk Provincial Park on the north shore of Lake Erie and 2) Ruthven Park near Cayuga; readily accessible by road.
