My early interest in the outdoors and wildlife can be
attributed to two people; my father, who required me to lug ducks during numerous hunting
trips, and my grandfather, who required me to lug milk during summers spent on his dairy
farm. Although hunting on the Delta Marsh was my idea of ecological nirvana, I became more
and more inquisitive about biological processes and wildlife conservation. This led to my
completing a wildlife biology degree at the University of Guelph in 1990. I also spent two
summers working at the Delta Waterfowl and Wetlands Research Station and two more working
on robins, warblers and Yellow-headed Blackbirds at the University of Manitoba Field
Station, as well as at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre - see, I'm not just a duck
guy! Following graduation, I spent a few years working for the Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources, and Ducks Unlimited. In 1992, I decided to see the world by doing a research
contract in South Africa. This led to a five-year stay and attaining my PhD. on the
White-faced Whistling Duck. I was very pleased to be hired as the Research Director of the
Long Point Waterfowl and Wetlands Research Fund in September 1997, as it enables me to
continue doing research on waterfowl and wetlands and live in a relatively untouched
portion of southern Ontario. I live in Simcoe, ON with my wife Valerie, and
our sons Noah and Caleb.
