Growing up, I always had a forest
nearby to explore, but it wasn't until I returned to my beautiful
ancestral homeland of Newfoundland, at the age of nine, that my love and
appreciation for the outdoors really took hold. This, among other things,
led me to the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, where I studied
Biology and received a B.Sc. in 2000. During that time, I spent two
summers working on the mudflats of the Bay of Fundy, counting shorebirds
(and their droppings!) every day during low tide. When the last tide came
in, I moved on to fish and for eight months I worked as a technician in a
winter flounder/sturgeon wetlab at the University of New Brunswick in
Saint John. After that time, I fledged and flew off to Ear Falls in
northwestern Ontario where I spent two summers running through the woods
catching frogs for my M.Sc. in Zoology at the University of Guelph.
Luckily, this amphibian experience metamorphosed into a job at Bird
Studies Canada, where I am now researching amphibians and marsh birds for
the Marsh Monitoring Program in Port Rowan, Ontario.
