U.S. State of the Birds 2010

11 March 2010 – The United States’ Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced the release of the State of the Birds 2010 report at a press conference on March 11. The publication follows a comprehensive report published a year ago, which indicated that nearly a third of the 800 bird species of the U.S. are endangered, threatened, or in significant decline. The 2010 report concludes that climate change threatens to further imperil hundreds of species of migratory birds, already under stress from habitat loss, invasive species, and other environmental threats.
The publication is the product of a collaborative effort as part of the U.S. North American Bird Conservation Initiative, between federal and state wildlife agencies and several scientific and conservation organizations. Visit the State of the Birds website for more information and to read the full report.

New Program Engages Students in Nest Monitoring

15 March 2010 – In collaboration with provincial and regional nest records schemes across Canada, Bird Studies Canada engages volunteers in long-term monitoring of nesting activity across Canada through our Project NestWatch program.
Participants gather data that helps us follow the health of bird populations, providing valuable information on the state of the wider environment, as birds are good indicators of the health of the habitats and ecosystems in which they live.
Project Nest Box is a new initiative that aims to involve school groups in nest monitoring. The program donates six nesting boxes to each interested school, to be installed on the school grounds. The students monitor the boxes throughout the spring and early summer, and report their observations online through Bird Studies Canada’s Project NestWatch website
Project Nest Box – School Nest Watch Program is a not-for-profit collaboration between the Aurora Environmental Advisory Committee Naturalization and Wildlife Working Group; Midpoint International Inc.; Bird Studies Canada; and the Royal Ontario Museum’s Ontario Nest Records Scheme. Select this link to learn more. Schools interested in participating should contact Carolin Grandin at Midpoint International Inc., at 1-888-646-4246 or carolin.grandin@midpoint-int.com.
