BirdLife International Reports on Conservation Status
of the World’s Birds

21 May 2007 – The World Conservation Union (also known as IUCN – the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) will release its 2007 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species this fall. BirdLife International is the Red List Authority for birds, and has released its annual Red List update for 2007. The latest BirdLife evaluation of the world’s birds indicates that more species than ever are threatened with extinction, and that additional conservation action is critical to reversing current declines. The number of bird species included on the Red List is steadily growing, and more than 22% of bird species now face an increased risk of extinction.
Although the 2007 IUCN Red List will reflect the deteriorating conservation status of the world’s birds, there is some encouraging news as well: some species have shown signs of recovery. For example, highly successful recovery programs have resulted in the downlisting of Mauritius Parakeet (from Critically Endangered to Endangered) and Spectacled Petrel (from Critically Endangered to Vulnerable). Visit the BirdLife International website for more information about the 2007 Red List update.

It’s Loon Survey Time!

1 June 2007 – Over the last two weeks, registered Canadian Lakes Loon Survey (CLLS) participants opened their mailboxes to find their 2007 CLLS survey packages – just in time for the survey season. June, July, and August are the primary months for surveying loon breeding, and anyone who spends at least a day at a lake during each month can participate. If you traditionally participate in the CLLS but have not received your kit, please contact Kathy Jones at aqsurvey@bsc-eoc.org to ensure that your registration and address are up-to-date. Also, there is still time for new participants to join this year’s survey. For details and to register, email Kathy at aqsurvey@bsc-eoc.org.

Maritimes Atlas Field Teams Hit the Road

1 June 2007 – Two field teams for the Maritimes Breeding Bird Atlas are hitting the road today to start training atlassers and conducting point counts and general atlassing across the region. One team will be focused on Nova Scotia, and the other on New Brunswick. For more information on dates and locations of atlasser training sessions or to get involved with the atlas, visit the atlas website or contact the atlas by email at atlasmaritimes@gmail.com or by calling toll free at 1-888-5Atlas5.

New Brunswick School Children Learn about Owls

1 June 2007 – Thanks to funding from the New Brunswick Wildlife Trust Fund, BSC Atlantic staff recently completed presentations to five different New Brunswick schools, reaching children from Grades 3-8 in both English and French. “Owls in New Brunswick: Who’s hooting in our woods?” included information on owl ecology, physiology, and breeding behaviour. The presentation used sound and video to capture the children’s imaginations. Stuffed owls loaned by the Canadian Wildlife Service, and a collection of owl pellets from the woods of New Brunswick, were met with great excitement by the children. Posters and other owl information handouts were provided for the classes after each presentation.

Bird Studies Canada Participates in World Ocean Day

1 June 2007 – BSC will be presenting a display of our British Columbia and national programs at the World Ocean Day celebration on Sunday June 3, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Blackie Spit (at the foot of McBride St.), Crescent Beach, South Surrey, BC. The BC Coastal Waterbird and Beached Bird surveys will form the focus of BSC’s display.
World Ocean Day is an international celebration, declared a decade ago at the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, to raise awareness of the importance of our oceans and the roles we can play in their conservation. The event is being hosted by the Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society, and will include interpretive beach walks, environmental displays, crafts for all ages, face painting, live music, food, prizes and more. For more information on World Ocean Day and the events being celebrated worldwide visit their website.
