In 1996, as the Canadian joint partner of BirdLife
International with the Canadian Nature Federation, Bird Studies Canada began implementing
the Important Bird Areas program. As part of a global initiative, this program identifies,
and helps protect, areas of significant bird habitat across Canada, and provides linkages
to similar programs underway throughout the hemisphere. A host of sites has already been
nominated, and many more are still to come. In 1996, Long Point was formally designated as
Canada's first globally Important Bird Area. |
 |
Since 1988, BSC has been making a Comprehensive Assessment
of Cuban Forest Habitats where tropical migrants and Cuban resident species spend the
winter. Working closely with ecologists from the Cuban Institute of Ecology and
Systematics and volunteers from Canada, our results demonstrate that Cuba is one of the
most important wintering areas for many of Canada's summer birds. |
 |
BSC's Latin American Training Program offers an intensive
month-long training course to some of Latin America's most talented ornithologists every
year at Long Point. Because the focus is on training trainers, the program is a
cost-effective investment in the research and conservation of Canadian migratory birds on
their Latin American wintering grounds. |
 |
BSC is studying the Effects of Selective Logging and
Habitat Fragmentation in Malaysia on populations of tropical rainforest birds and bats,
and helping develop land management plans for their conservation. |

To preserve biodiversity in Canada, we need a plan that sets priorities. It must
include areas used through the entire life of organisms. And it must be straightforward
and easy to understand. The Important Bird Areas project does all of this.Dr. Rob Butler, Research Scientist
Canadian Wildlife Service
Delta, BC
This training was one of the most
wonderful experiences I have had. I learned a lot of new things, and I improved on others
that I already knew.
