A NEW HEADQUARTERS

Until recently, BSC rented office facilities
from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources at the St. Williams Provincial Forest
Station, about 20 miles from Long Point. In 1998, the province privatized the forest
station and sold BSC's current office facility. BSC holds a non-renewable lease on this
facility with the new owners until March 2000.
In 1994, when the issue of privatization became known, the Board investigated various
potential headquarters sites in the Long Point area. Long Point was chosen as the future
permanent home of BSC, because it is where our other facilities exist, it is our
historical home, and because great economies can be achieved in keeping administrative and
program staff in one location. The new headquarters site is well situated for the purposes
of BSC; it is located on a main road with town services, it overlooks the Inner Bay and
Long Point, it provides opportunities for the restoration of key wildlife habitats, and it
will attract the general public to learn more about BSC and our programs. BSC will
incorporate the existing farmhouse and barn into the new Headquarters and National
Research Centre and we have obtained zoning approval for the construction of the new
facility.
The new Headquarters and National Research Centre will blend into the surrounding rural
and natural landscape and include important new facilities:
 |
 |
a reception area to orient and
provide guidance to all visitors to the site, to offer a place where volunteers and
supporters can meet and assemble, and to provide space for displays about programs and
accomplishments of Bird Studies Canada;
|
 |
meeting space for lecture series,
slide presentations, educational programs, and special events;
|
 |
a national data centre, with
state-of-the-art web-based computer services, for the storage and analysis of bird
population and productivity information;
|
 |
 |
office space to accommodate our
current (17) and projected (25) staff and a library and conference room for research and
meetings;
|
 |
a large porch-like element,
framing the view over the restored wetlands to the west;
|
 |
outdoor storage for boats and
vehicles in the renovated barn; and
|
 |
limited overnight accommodation
and a site custodian's apartment in the renovated farmhouse. |
