Long Point Waterfowl (LPW) is a non-profit, non-government organization dedicated to the study and conservation of waterfowl and wetlands at Long Point and
throughout the lower Great Lakes.
The primary purpose of LPW is to study the staging
ecology and requirements of waterfowl on the lower Great Lakes. We also monitor trends
in the distribution and abundance of waterfowl, perform research on waterfowl habitats,
and generate information useful for management purposes.
By making the results of our work
available to the public and scientific community, we are a strong voice for
conservation and we make a substantial contribution to the science of
waterfowl and wetland ecology. LPW is also committed to providing hands-on
opportunities for young wildlife technicians, biologists and scientists, as
well as to increasing public awareness of the importance of maintaining
healthy wetlands and sustainable waterfowl populations.
Establishment, Structure and Support for LPW
LPW was established in the late
1980s through the conservation-minded efforts and funding provided by the
Bluff's Club, a private hunting and conservation organization concerned with
the long-term welfare of waterfowl at Long Point. LPW is administered by
Bird Studies Canada and continues to be supported primarily by Bluff's Club
members. LPW also receives generous support from Ducks Unlimited Canada,
the Waterfowl Research Foundation, the Sydenham Conservation Foundation and
the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, as well as from concerned
individuals and interested corporations. LPW is managed and directed by a
Board of Directors and a Scientific Advisory Committee, which includes
representatives of Bird Studies Canada, the Canadian Wildlife Service, the
Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Ducks Unlimited, the University of
Western Ontario, the Bluff's Club and other private interests.
