Research Associates

Concept

The position of "Research Associate" is an honorary or courtesy appointment. Candidates for the position bring professional qualifications and experience that can support BSC's science objectives. They may also obtain for themselves some non-monetary rewards from their association with BSC and its partnership networks. The position is analogous to an Adjunct appointment in universities or research institutes in which appointees contribute in some mutually agreed manner. Appointees to the position will work on topics closely related to BSC's mission. The position is not open to persons wishing to investigate topics outside of BSC's mission.

Qualifications

Research Associates will have sufficient professional background and experience to bring "leading edge" understanding of scientific knowledge from one or more areas of ornithology (especially population and migration biology), ecology, or conservation biology. A "Senior Research Associate" will have a PhD, a publication record (normally in the order of at least 20 papers/articles) in relevant journals, and ten years or more of
related experience. "Research Associates" at early stages of their careers will normally have at least a Masters degree, some journal publications, and some experience that may be especially appropriate for particular projects of BSC.

Roles and Responsibilities

Appointees will work on some agreed upon topics of particular interest to BSC in areas such as:

* volunteer-based field surveys;
* program development and evaluation;
* data analyses and scientific writing;
* new, or related research; and
* advising or supervision of graduate students working with BSC data or programs.

Particular topics for each appointee, including new projects developed by a Research Associate that are to be associated with BSC, will be agreed upon in consultation with the Chair of the National Council and/or the Chair of the Long Point Bird Observatory Committee.

Terms of Appointment

The position of "Research Associate" does not carry a salary, or staff benefits from BSC. The duration of appointments will vary but will normally be for one year, subject to renewal as mutually agreed upon. Appointments up to three years (renewable) may be made for Senior Associates who are contributing to a wider range of science-based activities for BSC. Provisions for reimbursement of expenses must be negotiated with the Executive Director on an annual basis, subject to BSC's policies. Appointees will be expected to act collegially, and collaborate with staff, other volunteers and partner organizations. They will maintain the highest professional and ethical standards, and respect applicable BSC policies such as those for the use of BSC's properties, equipment and facilities, access to databases and publication of BSC data.

The Executive Director will consult with the Chair of the National Council and/or the Chair of the LPBO committee on proposed appointees, including proposed duration of appointments, responsibilities, support to be provided by BSC, and reporting arrangements (including scientific reviews of reports or draft papers). Appointments will be made by the Board and the terms will be specified in a memorandum of understanding with the appointee outlining expectations and "deliverables".
