The Red-shouldered Hawk

Participants in the survey use tape playback to elicit calls of Red-shouldered Hawks along roadside routes at 20 predetermined stops during one morning in late April or early May. Volunteers keep track of the number of Red-shouldered Hawks that respond to the tape, as well as the number of other hawks and woodpeckers that are seen or heard at each stop. Anyone can participate in the survey, but it helps if you are familiar with the various hawk and woodpecker species that breed in Ontario. Volunteers receive a training tape to help them learn the calls of woodpeckers and hawks found in Ontario.
