About the NatureCounts Database

NatureCounts is a web site and a database created and hosted by Bird Studies Canada, whose mission is to advance the understanding, appreciation and conservation of wild birds and their habitats, in Canada and elsewhere. The goal of NatureCounts is to facilitate the collection, management, analysis and sharing of natural inventory and monitoring data, with a particular focus on birds and other vertebrates such as amphibians, reptiles and bats.

NatureCounts is a node of the Avian Knowledge Network, and aims to provide access to bird monitoring data and facilate the understanding of the patterns and dynamics of bird populations across the Western Hemisphere.

NatureCounts offers customizable data entry forms for survey participants, data review tools for project coordinators and a number of other features that will help organizing and managing data on natural populations. NatureCounts, launched in spring 2007, is still in development, and we expect that new features will continue to be added in the future. If you are interested in contributing as a volunteer surveyor, you can view the list of projects currently hosted on NatureCounts. You should note that some projects are open to public participation, while other are subject to various conditions determined by each project coordinator.

If you are a project coordinator who would like to use NatureCounts for your own project, we would also like to hear from you. NatureCounts can host data most standard biological survey protocols.

Bird Studies Canada (BSC) is Canada's national bird conservation organization. Its mission is to advance the understanding, appreciation and conservation of wild birds and their habitats through studies that engage the skills, enthusiasm and support of volunteers, members, staff and the interested public. BSC conducts a wide range of local, regional, national and international programs, dependant upon the active involvement of thousands of volunteer "Citizen Scientists", guided by a small group of professional scientists.
