Our Project FeederWatch Volunteers

Project FeederWatch is possible because of the enthusiastic and dedicated support of the thousands of feeder owners enrolled in Project FeederWatch.

In honour of the 20th Anniversary of Project FeederWatch, we dug into the archives and discovered that 70 of the over 2000 Canadian participants have been participating since FeederWatch went national in 1987 and some Ontarians have participated even longer as part of the Ontario Bird Feeder Survey from 1977-1987.

As a token of our appreciation for their years of participation in Project FeederWatch, we sent long term volunteers a copy of Birds at Your Feeder. This book by FeederWatch founder Erica Dunn (Canadian Wildlife Service) and Diane Tessaglia-Hymes (Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology) draws upon the wealth of information gathered through Project FeederWatch. The books were generously donated to us by Bill Read, a loyal supporter and Patron Member of Bird Studies Canada.

Since its inception, Project FeederWatch has achieved a number of its goals, including: involving birdwatchers in serious ornithological study; gathering long-term data on winter bird populations throughout North America; detecting significant population declines or expansions before a species is in serious trouble; tracking the dynamic movements of nomadic and irruptive species during the winter months; identifying habitat features that attract or enhance bird populations; and providing direct feedback to project participants and the general public regarding bird population trends.

Our volunteers are the lifeblood of Project FeederWatch.
