Safety in the field
The safety measures you will need to take will depend on the environment you are nest searching in. Here are a few general tips to keep in mind:
- Plan ahead
- Map out your route. Whether you are driving to a barn, or searching in a wooded area, make sure you know where you are going and that you have the necessary equipment to get you there (e.g., road map, GPS)
- Tell someone where you are going
- Do not set out on long treks without water and food
- Carry a cell phone (make sure that it is charged)
- Wear proper clothing
- Long-sleeved shirts and pants are usually advised
- Wear proper footwear
- In barns, steel-toed boots with steel shanks are advised
- Be aware of wildlife and domestic animals around you. If you are searching for Barn Swallow nests in barns, be aware of the animals; move slowly and cautiously so as not to spook them.
Do not enter any stalls or pens with animals in them unless you have specific permission to do so from landowners.
